The Post Graduate Delirium 3

THE VIBE SHIFT

4:00 – I like to wake up long before the sun rises while the chilling night air is saying its last goodbye. As I sip on my sugarless cup of tea, I contemplate how I will get through the day. It’s the 5th of May and today is the day I am going to make it happen, the pitch for my TV show.

6:00 – Tharo is still asleep, I can hear her snores from the living room, this pregnancy has turned her into a louder sleeper and the thin walls of our apartment don’t help. She went to sleep angry at me. When I got home last night I couldn’t help but gush over my interaction with Ndororo, I felt a spark ignited within me but it was quickly diffused by her outrage. I had talked my way into pitching for a media giant but it came at a cost. I had abandoned my only friend when she needed me the most. I ran in the direction of her tormentor instead of being there for her. The guilt is becoming too much to bear, I need to leave this place before she wakes up, the atmosphere is tense.

8:00 – I have one slice of toast and a black coffee, by the time breakfast is over, I’m still hungry. I pack my documents into my bag and take a quick look at myself in the mirror; my hair looks stale and my shirt is creased but who cares, I’m an artist. I hear some movement coming from Tharo’s room. I run out of the apartment before she opens her door.
8:45 – the train platform is cold as usual, and my knees shake with every gust of wind that hits me from behind. My empty stomach seems to be growling to the rhythm of the oncoming train, I’m nervous and out of nowhere I feel myself thrown to the side by the weight of a man. I land hard on the cold floors, I look up and…
SMASH. He’s dead now.

9:00 – The train conductor runs out his cart flailing his hands in the air. A crowd of people gather around him as he falls to his knees in shock. Oh no, I’m going to be late for my meeting.
9:30 – We’ve been escorted out of the station. The sky has gone grey and it looks like the sky is about fall down. I can feel myself catching the flu. There is no way I’m going to make it to for my pitch. I call the number on the card ndororo gave me and it goes straight to voicemail. How do I teleport myself to the other side of this city in five seconds? I don’t have a chance. I call again and this time I leave a message trying my best to explain the situation but what if he doesn’t believe me? I take a video of myself in front of the paramedics carrying the dripping body bag on the stretcher.
“Hi, it’s Lilanga here. Can we shift our meeting to a later time? As you can see this guy jumped in front of the train I was supposed to catch,” I say pointing at the black bag, “so uhmm, this has totally messed up the departure schedule, talk about Murphy’s Law right?” I chuckle awkwardly and immediately regret it, “please call me back when you see this.”. Everyone is just staring at me in total disbelief. I send my video.

“What’s wrong with you?” an old lady asks me in disgust and I can’t answer.
14:00 – He still hasn’t called me back.
16:00 – He still hasn’t responded to my video message.
18:00 – I’m still waiting at the train station; the security guards must think I’m crazy but I wait a little more.
20:00 – I think it’s time to give it up.

Be on the lookout for the next episode …
