When Abraham Lincoln defined democracy, 159 years ago, believe it or not, he had Hakainde Hichilema’s administration in mind.

Perhaps Lincoln had not visualized a barefoot village boy, taking shifts between the classroom and the cattle, when he defined democracy, but HH, the boy in question, had imagined it. And this imagination took a deep breath, unfolded its petite strong wings, and flew.

HH’s Early Life
Hakainde Hichilema, also known as HH was born on 4th June 1962 in the Southern province. He was more or less a regular boy in Monze district, alternating between responsibilities at home and attending Kalomo Secondary school. This was until he finished high school and received a scholarship to the University of Zambia.
His desire for, and his impressive track record in business, might have been birthed at this point as he not only graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Business Administration but later obtained an MBA degree from the University of Birmingham, UK.

Business
Since he graduated from the University, HH made it a point of duty to implement all he learned in his school days by investing in Agriculture, which contributes about 19 percent to the country’s GDP. Gradually, his business grew as he became a large-scale farmer, creating more job opportunities for the Zambian youths, supplying farm produce to the local Zambian market as well as investing in other areas like tourism, imports, shares, and working in Coopers and Lybrand as the CEO.

Becoming Zambia’s president
HH joined the United Party for National Development –UPND- and served as a member until he won the presidency of the party after its leader, Anderson Mazoka died in 2006. From 2006 to 2016, HH ran five times for the presidency and failed forward in those five times.
On August 9, 2021, Bally as he is fondly called, ran again and this time, he was successful and won in style.

One year up!

Achievements
HH, as every other six presidents of the republic of Zambia before him, made promises to the people. The promises include letting no Zambian go to bed hungry, providing more job opportunities, turning the country’s economy around, and uniting the people, among others.
Though not all expectations have yet been met, HH has begun leaving diverse distinct positive changes. These include;
-Raising measures to provide enough power for Zambia as well as exporting surplus electricity to neighbors.
-Reducing the alarming rate of unemployment by recruiting 30, 000+ teachers.
-Granting free primary and secondary school education to all Zambian children
-Promoting skills acquisition and educational development of youths by sending them to various TEVETA-affiliated colleges.

HH was a cattle boy who sweated along his people as they sowed. A scholar who leaped with the people when they harvested. A businessman who racked his brain along with his people as they bargained their farm produces for the Kwacha. A political aspirant who took defeat after defeat, believing along with his people that the country Zambia was worth fighting for.
More so, he is a president who has so far kept his promises, even if it meant depriving himself of receiving a salary for more than 8 months.

HH’s story to the presidential seat reminds me so much of Isaac Newton and the great philosophers and creatives who despite hitting a hard wall and getting it rough in their different quests, persisted in believing their dreams and finally achieving their life-long vision.
So much has been done in a year, but much more is to be expected in the coming years. Will HH be a president that starts a marathon like it is a sprint and fall back in the course of the race or will he soar like an eagle and remain airborne for as long as it takes? Only time will reveal the answer to this question.
